Drive through Chichibu in summer and enjoy fruit picking and boating the Nagatoro Line Kudari

Only an hour and a half by express train from Tokyo, Chichibu in Saitama is an ideal destination for an easy weekend getaway. Chichibu’s local delights include blueberry picking from the start of June to the end of August, waraji katsu (a thin deep fried cutlet that is first marinated and rolled in breadcrumbs), and Nagatoro Line Kudari river boating, which is both thrilling and relaxing. Before heading home, drop by Matsuri no Yu for a relaxing soak in a hot spring right in front of Chichibu Station.

    Head to Chichibu Blueberry Village, a 30 minute drive away, for a fun day of blueberry picking. Blueberry Garden Tsurumaki, one of the farms here, is the place to start. It also offers the rare pink blueberry as well as pink lemonade.

    It's worth visiting the town of Ogano if only for a lunch of wild game at this popular restaurant. The menu includes such dishes as venison sausages and venison pickled in miso. All the meat comes from wild deer hunted locally. The restaurant recommends waraji katsudon, deep fried cutlets on rice, for diners new to this style of cuisine. Waraji katsudon is one of a number of unique dishes that do not have the pronounced aroma often associated with wild game, or jibier.

    No visit to Chichibu is complete without a Nagatoro Line Kudari boat trip down Nagatoro River. The boat offers close-up views of Iwadani, a peculiar-shaped rock formation and a recognized place of scenic beauty, before it descends into a series of rapids that provide more than enough excitement for the day. There are a number of baths to choose from at Matsuri no Yu, including an outdoor bath with spectacular views, a high-concentration, artificially carbonated hot spring, and a “silk” bath.
