Guide to JR Line (Shinkansen and Limited Express) Ticket Booking Service (Instructions from Ticket Pickup to Boarding)

Instructions for those who have chosen "Pick-up at the station"

1-1. Issuing Paper Tickets

  • Before boarding, please make sure to obtain paper tickets using the self-service ticket machines (Kiosks) available at JR line stations.

  • To avoid potential challenges, such as crowded Kiosks or difficulty locating them at large stations, please plan ahead and arrive at the station with ample time.

  • To issue your ticket, you will need a dedicated QR code, which can be found on the Reservation Confirmation Page.

  • Paper tickets can be issued at stations where kiosks from JR East, JR Tokai, and JR Hokkaido are installed. Additionally, it is available at stations served by JR West on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Please note that ticket pickup is limited to these stations only and is not available nationwide, so be sure to take this into consideration.

  • You can check whether you can collect your paper tickets at a specific station by entering the station name in the box below.

  • When issuing your paper tickets at Shin-Osaka Station or Kyoto Station, you can only do so at JR Tokai's Kiosks. Please note that they cannot be obtained at JR West's.

  • As ticket issuance is limited to specific stations, we kindly request that all tickets be issued before the start of your journey.

1-2-1. Instructions For Those Collecting Paper Tickets At JR East Stations

  • Stations on JR lines in the Kanto, Tohoku, and Chubu regions are operated by JR East. Additionally, at each station on the Tokaido Shinkansen, JR Tokai's kiosks are available. Please refer to section 1-2-3 if you are collecting your physical tickets from there.

  • At JR East stations, you can issue your paper tickets using the purple and black "Reserved seat ticket vending machine"

  • You can use the Kiosks to collect your physical tickets between 5:00 AM and 11:30 PM.

  • Please have your QR code ready on the "Reservation Confirmation Page" in advance. Once ready, press the "Scan QR Code" button at the bottom right of the Kiosk screen, then scan your QR code using the reader at the bottom right of the Kiosk.

  • Some Kiosks may not have a "Scan QR Code" button. In such cases, please press the 'Retrieve Internet Reservation' button. On the next screen, select either JR East or JR West, then scan your QR code using the reader at the bottom right of the machine.

  • Once successfully scanned, you will see your reservation details on the screen. Please read through the information to ensure it is correct, then press the 'Issue Ticket' button to receive your ticket

  • When multiple QR codes are displayed on the reservation confirmation page, kindly follow the same procedure to issue all tickets.

1-2-2. Instructions For Those Issuing Tickets At JR Hokkaido Stations

  • At JR stations on Hokkaido's railway lines, tickets are issued using purple 'Reserved Seat Ticket Machines' or orange 'Interactive Ticket Machines

  • You can use the Kiosks to collect your physical tickets between 5:00 AM and 11:30 PM.

  • Please have your QR code ready on the "Reservation Confirmation Page" in advance. Once ready, press the "Scan QR Code" button in the middle of the Kiosk screen, then scan your QR code using the reader at the bottom right of the Kiosk.

  • Once successfully scanned, you will see your reservation details on the screen. Please read through the information to ensure it is correct, then press the 'Issue Ticket' button to receive your ticket

  • When multiple QR codes are displayed on the reservation confirmation page, kindly follow the same procedure to issue all tickets.

1-2-3. Guidance for Ticket Issuance at JR Tokai Stations

  • Stations along the Tokaido Shinkansen line and JR lines in the Tokai region are JR Tokai stations.

  • At JR Tokai, reserved seat tickets will be issued at the blue 'Reserved Seat Ticket Machine'

  • You can use the Kiosks to collect your physical tickets between 5:00 AM and 11:30 PM.

  • After displaying the QR code on the reservation confirmation page, press the 'QR Code Scan' button on the lower section of the ticket machine menu screen. Then, position the QR code under the reader located at the bottom right of the machine

  • Once successfully scanned, you will see your reservation details on the screen. Please read through the information to ensure it is correct, then press the 'Issue Ticket' button to receive your ticket

  • When multiple QR codes are displayed on the reservation confirmation page, kindly follow the same procedure to issue all tickets.

1-2-4. Guidance for Ticket Issuance at JR West Stations

  • Tickets can be issued at JR West stations only when stations where the Hokuriku Shinkansen line stops. Please note that at Shin-Osaka Station, tickets can only be issued at JR Tokai's ticket machines, Kindly proceed with great care.

  • Tickets are issued at the green "Midorino Ticket Vending Machine" at JR West stations.

  • You can use the Kiosks to collect your physical tickets between 5:00 AM and 11:30 PM.

  • After displaying the QR code on the reservation confirmation page, press the 'QR Code Scan' button on the lower section of the ticket machine menu screen. Then, position the QR code under the reader located at the bottom right of the machine

  • Once successfully scanned, you will see your reservation details on the screen. Please read through the information to ensure it is correct, then press the 'Issue Ticket' button to receive your ticket

  • When multiple QR codes are displayed on the reservation confirmation page, kindly follow the same procedure to issue all tickets.

General Guidance After Ticket Issuance

3-1.When entering the ticket gate for the conventional or bullet train using the boarding ticket

  • Two tickets are issued for each application zone, the "boarding ticket" and the "limited express ticket". This service provides tickets where both the "boarding ticket" and the "limited express ticket" cover the same zone.

  • When passing through the conventional train gate, please insert only one 'boarding ticket.' If the station you are entering or exiting differs from the one listed on the issued 'boarding ticket,' please refer to Sections 4-1-1 to 4-1-3 and Section 4-2. When using transportation IC cards such as Suica or Pasmo to enter, please refer to Section 4-1-1.

  • When going through the Shinkansen ticket gate, please insert both the 'boarding ticket' and the 'limited express ticket' stacked together

3-2. When boarding a Shinkansen or limited express train within the section indicated on the "Limited Express Ticket"

  • When you select reserved seats or green car seats at the time of application, the ticket will include a limited express ticket specifying the date, section, train name, car number, and seat number

  • For those who selected non-reserved seats at the time of application, a limited express ticket specifying the date and section will be issued on the ticket

  • It is required to use the Shinkansen and limited express trains according to the dates, routes, and train details indicated on the ticket. Please carefully check the information on your ticket and station information, signs and train car markings

  • Some trains or seats may have onboard ticket inspections. Please ensure you have your ticket with you at all times for immediate presentation during your journey.

General information after ticket issuance (Guidance on when additional payment is required or not required)

4-1-1. Information in case the station you enter or exit from is different from the station indicated on your ticket

  • If the station you enter or exit differs from the station indicated on the ticket, please pay the fare for the missing section separately, since the issued ticket is valid for a partial section.

  • At the entrance or exit stations, you can pay the fare for the missing section by going through the ticket gate directly with a transportation system IC card such as Suica or Pasmo, or by purchasing a separate fare ticket.

  • If you see a black-and-white symbol such as "ward" in the section column on the ticket, please check item 4-2 as well.There may be instances where no additional fare is required due to special exceptions within major cities. If there are symbols such as 区 (ku) written in white letters against a black background in the section field of your ticket, please also refer to section 4-2 for more details

4-1-2. Information for those who applied for Shinkansen

  • Refer to section 4-1-1 for basic rules when the station to enter or exit is different from the station indicated on the ticket

  • When entering through the ticket gate of the conventional line using a transit IC card such as Suica or Pasmo, please insert your "boarding ticket" and "express ticket" in two layers at the ticket gate of the Shinkansen you are transferring to, and then touch the same IC card. Please be sure to follow this order

  • If you plan to use you use a conventional JR line without exiting the ticket gate after getting off the Shinkansen, please pay for the rideover at the ticket gate of the last conventional line you exited, using a transportation system IC card or cash.

  • Please check the official JR website in advance to confirm that the station you plan to get off at is compatible with the transportation system IC card, as the last station on the local train may not be compatible with the card

4-1-3. Information for those who applied for 'Conventional Line Express'

  • Refer to section 4-1-1 for basic rules when the station to enter or exit is different from the station indicated on the ticket

  • When using an express train on a conventional line, after entering a JR station with a transportation IC card such as Suica or Pasmo, you may not pass through the ticket gate before boarding the express train. If you exit the station at the express train's destination or any subsequent station on the conventional line without passing through the gate using your IC card, you might end up paying excessive fare. To avoid this issue, when using an IC card, please exit through the ticket gate before boarding the express train or settle the fare onboard the express train

  • Please note that the final station for exits on local trains may not support the use of IC cards. Prior to your disembarkation, please verify whether your intended station is compatible with IC cards on JR's official website.

4-2. Special "Train Ticket" Exception for those who enter and exit at certain metropolitan city stations

4-3. Points to note when making a stopover

  • For those who have applied for unreserved seats on the Shinkansen may board and disembark the Shinkansen as many times as they wish within the designated section on your ticket, as long as you don't exit the ticket gate. However, it is not possible to return to the previous station.

  • For those who have applied for non-reserved seats on conventional limited express trains and reserved or green car seats on Shinkansen and conventional limited express trains, the "limited express ticket" for the remaining section will become invalid once you get off the train.

  • If you are traveling with a ticket for a distance of 101 km or more, you can make as many stopovers as you like, entering and exiting the ticket gate, as long as you do not go backwards. However, as mentioned above, the "limited express ticket" for the remaining section will be invalid, and for those to whom the special exception in item 4-2 applies, the "ticket" will be collected at the time of a stopover within the metropolitan area and the remaining section will be invalid.

4-4. Points to note when missing your designated train

  • For passengers who have reserved seats or Green Car seats on Shinkansen or conventional limited express trains but have missed their designated train, can use the unreserved seats in standard cars on later Shinkansen or limited express trains on the same day.

  • However, if you have reserved seats on a train with all reserved seats, such as "Hayabusa" or "Kagayaki", you will have to use the subsequent train as a standing passenger on the following train. For some trains such as "Narita Express" and "Azusa", you can use any available seat on the following train.

  • For those who have applied for unreserved seats on Shinkansen and limited express trains on conventional lines may use them on any train only on the same day.

  • Please note that "limited express tickets" are non-refundable after the departure of the designated train.
