Tatemon Festival
Well known as a typical scene from summer in Uozu, Tatemon is the name for the magnificent giant posts which carry thousands of lanterns. It is held at the Suwa Shrine, a shrine for safe seafaring and good fish catches. Hundreds of paper lanterns hang on the Tatemon and glisten as the bearers shout vigorously, their gallant figures unforgettable. This festival was selected as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1997 and an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2016.
