Hanawabayashi Festival花輪ばやし

Event

The Hanawabayashi is a traditional musical performance offered as part of the yearly festival at Saiwaiinari-jinja Shrine, long revered as the area's guardian shrine. The Hanawabayashi is designated at a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property as well as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. During the festival, the town is enwrapped in an energetic atmosphere; main stalls or dolls ones, lavish parade floats decorated with lacquer and gold dust weave through the streets accompanied by Hanawabayashi music.

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
