Event
An event held each year on August 16 to guide the spirits of the dead come home for the Bon festival back to the afterlife using giant characters made of fire on mountainsides. The most famous is the character for big (dai) on the Higashiyama part of Nyoigatake, but there's also another dai burned on the Okitayama (near Kinkakuji Temple), the characters of the Lotus Sutra (myoho) Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama, funagata (boat shape) on Nishigamo Funayama, and toriigata (shrine gate shape) on Mandoroyama and Mandarayama. The burning characters lighting up the night air is a summer tradition in Kyoto.
