Yatsushiro National Fireworks Competition Festival (やつしろ全国花火競技大会)
Japan's leading fireworks technicians gather and show off their techniques for this large-scale fireworks competition. Set on the riverbed of the Kumagawa River, approximately 15,000 fireworks, including powerful starmines and 6 and 12 inch shells that become large flowering fireworks, are launched that irradiate and color the autumn night sky. There is also an attractively wide variety of paid seating (*all require reservations), such as premium seats to watch the fireworks up close, couple seats for two to enjoy, and special seats that are rare in Japan where you can see the fireworks while laying down.

Kumamoto Areas

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
