Suma-dera Temple
Suma-dera is a famous ancient temple that is associated with the Genpei War. It is the head temple of the Suma-dera sect of Shingon Buddhism. There are many fascinating things to see inside the Temple, including the Aoba no Fue (the flute of Taira no Atsumori), the tomb where Taira no Atsmori’s head is buried, the Benkei Bell, etc. In the spring, the Suma-dera Temple is a famous place for viewing the cherry blossom, with around 500 cherry trees in the Temple grounds, including the double-flowered cherry, Yoshino and weeping cherry varieties. Particularly beautiful sights include the row of cherry trees lining the entrance path, as viewed from the Niomon Gate, the wonderful contrast between the cherry trees and the red-painted Ryuge Bridge, and the Genpei Garden, etc. The Suma-dera Temple is open to visitors from 8:30 to 17:00. There is no admission charge. Parking is available; the nearest station is Suma-dera Station.
