Sugi no Baba in Akizuki
Sugi no Baba is a road lined by cherry trees that is located in the Akizuki district of Asakura City in Fukuoka Prefecture, a city known as the “Little Kyoto of Kyushu” because it retains much of the atmosphere of a traditional castle town. A total of around 200 cherry trees (including the Yoshino and hill cherry varieties) line a roughly 500 meter stretch of the road. In the period between late March and early April each year, when the cherry blossom is at its most beautiful, the trees form a “cherry blossom tunnel”; the evening illuminations, when the cherry blossom is lit up by naked light bulbs, are a must-see. According to tradition, during the period when Akizuki was still ruled as a feudal domain, the road was lined with Japanese cedar trees, but these were subsequently replaced by cherry trees. The “Akitsuki Spring Festival” is held on the first Sunday of April each year. Toilets, shops and paid parking available.
