Kyoto Botanical Gardens
Opened in 1924, this is Japan’s first public botanical gardens. The spacious grounds host flower beds, a Western-style garden, and large greenhouse garden. In total, some 12,000 varieties of plants are planted in the garden. The garden is also renowned for its cherry blossoms. Yoshino cherries, Yae red weeping cherries, and numerous other varieties of cherry trees grow around the flower beds near the main gate and on the north side of the greenhouse, coming into bloom around early April. An additional 450 other cherry trees spanning 130 varieties such as Sato-zakura cherries, bloom in profusion elsewhere throughout the garden. During the blooming period, generally from late March to early April, the trees are also lit up at night. Th admission fee is 200 yen for adults, 150 yen for high school students, free for junior high school students and under. Shops, toilets and parking available.
