Okuhiei (on the grounds of the Enryaku-ji Temple)
Okuhiei is the collective term for the temples dotting Mt. Hiei, a sacred mountain straddling Kyoto and Shiga. The Enryaku-ji Temple was founded by the great monk Saicho. A world-renowned Buddhist temple carrying on over 1,200 years of history and tradition, the Enryaku-ji Temple was registered a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. In November when the fall foliage on the temple's grounds is at its peak, a Maple Festival is held in the Yokogawa area centering on the Yokogawa Main Hall. The views of Lake Biwa, Otsu, and the streets of Kyoto between branches of Japanese maples dyed crimson by their leaves is truly spectacular. A shuttle bus connects the top of Mt. Hiei, the Enryakuji Bus Center (East Pagoda), West Pagoda, and Yokogawa.
