Shirakami Sanchi
This vast mountainous area of ??about 130,000 hectares reaches from the southwestern part of Aomori Prefecture to the northwestern part of Akita Prefecture. In 1993, 16,971 hectares at the center was registered as a World Heritage Site. It is covered with virgin beech forest, which is home to rare flora and fauna such as black woodpeckers and golden eagles, both nationally protected. From mid-October to late October, Japanese beech and Japanese maples turn their fall colors and visitors enjoy spectacular scenery.
