Lake Akan
A lake inside Akan Mashu National Park which is the fifth largest freshwater lake in Hokkaido. The lake is famous as being a habitat for kokanee salmon and marimo, a variety of algae which can grow in round balls and which is designated a Special Natural Monument. In most years, Mt. Oakan on the shore of the lake starts turning red and gold around September, with the peak time for enjoying the fall colors of the area's Japanese mountain maples, Japanese rowans, and Japanese maples being from late September to early October.
