Kawaura Onsen
This hot spring, owned and operated by the Kawaura Onsen Yamagatakan hotel, has been a favorite of countless bathers since 1561 and was prized by the mighty samurai lord Takeda Shingen as a secluded hot spring bathing destination. The hotel is located along the upper reaches of the Fuefuki River, one of the most beautiful rivers in the Koshu district. From the hotel's bathhouse facilities, bathers can take in the beautiful ravine area and the Mountains of Kai. The current owner of the hotel, its 15th, can trace his lineage back to Yamagata Masakage, one of the 24 Generals of Takeda Shingen. The hotel is surrounded by the beauty of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park and steeped in romantic history. The waters of the hotel's simple hot spring are said to treat a variety of ailments, including nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, and joint stiffness. The hotel also offers a local sightseeing plan which includes Nishizawa Gorge, deep mountain, and four wineries in the Katsunuma area.
