Shin Tamagawa Onsen
A hot spring district with a single source spring which boasts the greatest volume of water flow in the nation, generating some 9,000 liters of piping hot water every minute. Known as the place where Japanese-style stone saunas were invented and the only place in the country where visitors can enjoy a natural stone sauna, the area bustles with tourists seeking to be soothed and relaxed by the local hot spring facilities. The area's source spring contains an abundance of hydrochloric acid, something rarely found anywhere in the world, and its waters are strongly acidic, with a pH of 1.2. These waters are said to aid recovery from fatigue and ease skin diseases, nerve pain, and rheumatism. Their steam, which contains minute amounts of hydrogen sulfide gas, are said to help treat bronchitis, colds, and asthma. Some of the bathhouses in the area have facilities for drinking these hot spring waters for their health benefits, as well.
