"This Buddhist temple was originally called the ""Tokoji Temple,"" but after it became the site of the grave of Toyotomi Hidenaga, half-brother of the mighty lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it was renamed based on Hidenaga's posthumous Buddhist name. Records state the main temple building was rebuilt in 1711. The main temple building enshrines numerous items which tell us about Koriyama in the time of Hidenaga, such as a painting of the lord created by the artist Kano Sadanobu, and a seal box used as part of the local Hakomoto system. Temple treasures also include a thousand-armed Kannon statue said to have decorated the home of the first Ashikaga shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Additionally, there is a seven-tier stone pagoda on the grounds which records state was erected by Emperor Shomu."

豊臣秀吉の弟、豊臣秀長の菩提樹でもある春岳寺。豊臣秀長は秀吉の右腕として活躍した戦国武将。ここ大和郡山城の城主として100万石をおさめた。まさか秀長であればもっと大きな寺院かと思いきや意外とこじんまりとしていて驚かされる。

豊臣秀長の位牌菩提寺です。この「位牌菩提寺」と単なる「菩提寺」の違いがよくわかりません。それはともかく、秀長の肖像画も残されているそうです。このあたりは箱本十三町と呼びますが、その箱本制度の文献や史料が残されているそうです。

郡山には、豊臣秀吉の異父弟の大納言秀長のゆかりの地が二つあります。ひとつは、墓所の大納言塚、もうひとつは、彼の肖像画などが残されているこの春岳院です。豊臣関係というだけあって、山門も本堂も威厳があって素晴らしい建築物です。
