Kosenji Temple

Temple
This ancient Buddhist temple was founded in 1578. According to records, the temple's magnificent, history-leaden Sakuramon gate was built some 400 years ago with lumber leftover from the construction of Kumamoto Castle and was later used as a field hospital for the Satsuma army during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. The temple also has a scripture house which enshrines a complete set of Buddhist scriptures donated in the mid-Edo period by Munakataya, a wealthy merchant company whose fortune was built on rice.
