This museum operates out of the remodeled Takanabeya Ryokan, an inn built in 1921. Making use of the former inn's guestrooms, the wooden, three-story museum contains exhibits on the history of Hososhima, a port town which has bustled since ancient times as an excellent port on the southern east coast of Kyushu. The building unusually features a carriage porch capped by a bowed karahafu gabled roof, and because of its rarity has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the city.

大正時代に建てられた「高鍋屋旅館」を修理復元した木造三階建ての建物で、現在は細島の歴史についての資料館になっています。入館料は210円、建物などについての解説も聞くことができました。実に良いアトモスフィアを感じさせる建物です。
細島繁栄のゆかりの建物

細島は江戸時代以来南九州の港町として繁栄したところです。随所に当時の繁栄ぶりを偲ばせる建物が残っています。ここも明治時代には珍しい木造建物３階の旅館で、政府や軍人の高官も宿泊したところです。当時の品々などが展示されており、受付のおばさんがいろいろ案内してくれました。

この建物は細島港に面していて、かつては、港に出入りする船を利用する客の船宿として栄えていたそうです。現在は、その往時の繁栄を思い出させてくれる品々が展示されています。
