Karaya Shokudo
This diner built in the style of the traditional folk homes of the Yaeyama Islands is located in Akaishi on northern Ishigaki Island. The diner naturally offers classic Okinawan dishes such as Yaeyama soba (a local style of wheat noodles) and chanpuru (Okinawan stir fry). Other popular offerings include the sashimi of the day made with fresh local seafood, fried local fish, soki soba (Yaeyama noodle soup topped with pork spare ribs that has been simmered for hours, , and their Karaya set meals, which feature a hamburger steak made with Misaki beef. We also recommend their fresh shima banana, guava, and mango juices. One of the diner's lesser-known specialties is ikasumi shiru soba. The diner is one of if not the only place on the island that serves this extravagant dish, which features Yaeyama soba served in a squid ink soup made with lots of tender fresh-caught squid. Only a few servings of are served each day.
