This historic building, designated as an Important Cultural Property, is located along National Route 47 in Sakaida, Mogami Town, Mogami County. It was the residence of the headman of the village on the border with the domain of Sendai; “Hojin” refers to an official who guards the border. It is considered to be the “House of the Hojin” (Hojin no Ie) described in The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Matsuo Basho, who stayed at this house and left behind the line of poetry “Bitten by fleas and lice, / I slept in a bed, / A horse urinating all the time / Close by my pillow.”

芭蕉ゆかりの宿

松尾芭蕉が、蚤虱馬の尿する枕もと、と奥の細道に綴った、ゆかりの宿。宮城県と山形県の県境である境田にあり、昔は国境を守る役人の家だったそうです。内部見学は有料ですが、馬やが家の中にあり、芭蕉の句がしのばれます。

JRの本数は少ないですが、堺田駅からは徒歩５分なのでアクセスはいいです。見学は10-15分もあれば充分。次の電車まで1時間半から2時間は空くので、電車旅の人は、向いのお蕎麦屋さん「時空」（週末限定開店）に予約を入れておいて時間をつぶす他ありません。

江戸時代の古民家が公開されているところは各所にあっても、ここは囲炉裏に実際火が配られていて、藁が焼かれたような香ばしい香りが身体を包みます。井戸水でいれたというお茶もまろやか！管理人の中鉢さんのお話も引き込まれて、とても素晴らしい時間でした。近くには分水嶺やトロトロ温泉日本一のしんとろの湯もあるので、ぜひ合わせて巡っていただきたい場所です。
