Koto River Fireflies
Shionoe Onsen, the oldest hot spring district in the prefecture, is also famous for being a habitat for fireflies, and visitors can see fireflies around the Koto River, which flows through the center of the district. A firefly festival is held in the district from early to mid-June, the period when the fireflies are seen in most years, and during this time the festival grounds exude a magical atmosphere. A special “Firefly Hall” tend is set up inside which visitors can take in the stunning sight of some 2,000 fireflies flying around in. During the festival, a variety of events fun for children and adults alike are also held.
