It is a symbol of Marugame Port, which used to be a busy landing port for "Konpira Pilgrims" and was completed in 1838 by people living in Edo (present-day Tokyo). The lanterns, which were once used as landmarks by visitors, are still lit at night and watch over Marugame Port today.
