Nidan Falls
This waterfall is located in Sandankyo Gorge, one of the most secluded areas in western Japan, and here visitors can enjoy walking in a world resembling a traditional landscape painting. The powerful waterfall gushes with a thunderous roar and can be reached by taking a ferry boat from Sarutobi. Counted as one of the five most beautiful areas in Sandankyo Gorge, its name literally means “Two Tier Falls,” and indeed it once had two tiers, but in 1988, the rock wall of the first tier collapsed after a heavy downpour, and today the waterfall only has one tier. Visitors can actually watch as the water of the falls prizes away the falls’ rock wall. The falls are located around a two and a half hour walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge. The path to the falls may be closed due to natural disaster, and thus visitors are encouraged to check in advance.
