Kurobuchi

Valley
Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge has been awarded three stars, the highest amount possible, by France’s authoritative Blue Guide travel guide. This pool in the gorge is counted among the gorge’s five most beautiful areas, alongside Sarutobi, Nidan Falls, Sandan Waterfall, and Mitsutaki Falls. Boasting some of the best scenery in the gorge, the pool’s name literally translates to “Black Pool” and is derived from the black appearance of the water at its deepest depths. Enclosed by 100-meter-high cliffs on either side, ferry boats can take visitors across the water and give you the chance to look up at the towering, majestic walls from the surface of the river.
