Dento Kogei Kishu Zuishiyaki
This pottery workshop and gallery is located 10 minutes from the Wakayama-kita Interchange on the Hanwa Expressway. Zuishi-yaki ware is a product of Suzumarucho in modern-day Wakayama City. It is also known as Suzumaru-yaki, Meppotani-yaki, Nagusa-yaki, Kijo-yaki, and Wakayama-yaki. Zuishi-yaki is notable for its blue-green colors, which have been described as resembling “fresh grass.” This is the origin of the name. The pottery was founded with permission from the Kishu Domain by the founder of Okazakiya, Sakagami Jujiro in 1796. It is currently operated by the 6th generation of Okazakiya, Sakagami Jujiro. The museum-like gallery’s exhibits numerous works worthy of Cultural Property status.
