Ubaga Mochiya Main Store
A Japanese confectionary shop situated along the Tokaido Highway in Oji, Kusatsu City. The shop sells “Ubaga Mochi,” a type of ankoro mochi (mochi rice cake wrapped in sweet bean jam). Made according to the same recipe for over 400 years, these tasty treats are said to have been eaten by the great shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and were depicted in the ukiyoe woodblock prints of renowned artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai. The shop also sells seasonal snacks and other Japanese confections like “Honjin Monaka” wafer cakes and “Aobanagashi” made with Aobana (a variety of Asiatic dayflower), the official flower of Kusatsu City.
