Kunozan Toshogu Shrine / Kuno Baien (久能山東照宮・久能梅園)

Shrine

This shrine and garden in Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City is famous for many flowering plum and cherry blossom trees. This includes the Miwariume plum said to have been planted by Tokugawa Ieyasu himself. Visitors can enjoy seeing the grounds dyed pink from late December, when the early-flowering varieties bloom, to mid-April when the late-flowering varieties bloom. Set to the backdrop of Suruga Bay, the shrine and garden are one of the area's most scenic spots.

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
