Mukai Kuro Beach
This clamming beach in Owase City is one of the best in Mie Prefecture. You can reach it by taking the bus bound for Kii Matsumoto from JR Owase Station for 11 minutes, getting off at the Mukai bus stop, and walking another five minutes. Benzai-jima Island is visible in the bay, as are wave eroded cavities and sea caves along the shore. The season for gathering Manilla clams lasts from late March to early June. Nearby you can visit the Kumano Kodo Center to learn about the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. Yumekodo is close too, where you can bathe in deep ocean water. It's a great place for a day of fun for parents and kids alike.
