Kanayama Megaliths
A term used to refer to groups of megaliths in three locations, including one Historic Site-designated Jomon period archeological site. Several of the stones are taller than a person and at first glance they appear to simply be scattered about. However, there are indentations and lines on the stones which were clearly carved by human hands and, when connected, they reveal shapes such as the Big Dipper. At the present time, the stones are believed to have been used for astronomical observation in the Jomon period, and it is conjectured that the people who lived here over 5,000 years ago used the position of the sun to measure the time of the year.
