Kotokuji Temple

Temple
This Rinzai Zen temple is in Tsumago-juku, a nationally Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. National Route 256 runs through the area. Founded in 1500 during the Muromachi period, it is part of Kiso’s Seven Gods of Fortune pilgrimage (Ebisu) and the 21st of the 49 Sacred Chubu Yakushi Sites. It’s on a stone rampart above the main village, so you can see out over all of Tsumago-juku from the precincts. This is great in the fall when the autumn colors along the Kisoji Road are in full swing. The white walls, the impressive hedge, and the venerable weeping cherry tree before the gate, said to be over 250 years old, are all highlights. The temple has also preserved treasures like an antique palanquin, said to be the forerunner of the rickshaw.
