Tagajo Castle Ruins

Castle / Ruins of Castle
This castle site on top of Matsushima Hill is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Kokufu-Tagajo Station and was designated as a National Historic Site in 1922. Built by Ono no Azumabito in 724, Tagajo Castle played a central role in the politics of ancient Tohoku. A monument to the castle was discovered in the early Edo period, and many scholars later conducted research thereafter. It's counted as one of Japan's three major historical sites along with Heijo Palace in Nara Prefecture and Dazaifu in Fukuoka Prefecture. Several cherry trees are planted on the grounds, and lots of locals visit to view the blossoms every spring.
