Umen Bansho (うーめん番所)

Soba / Udon

A restaurant serving umen, fine white noodles made without oil which are a Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture specialty. Legend has it the dish was invented over 400 years ago by Suzuki Asuemon for his weakened father and later presented as a gift to his lord. Thereafter, this long-beloved local specialty was also gifted to the Katakura clan and the Date clan. The noodles are notable for being either three sun and three bu, shorter than somen noodles, or four sun and three bu. These noodles are tasty whether warm or cold and are eaten with a light, soy sauce-based dipping sauce.

Lying along the northeastern coast of Japan, Miyagi prefecture is home to lashings of natural parks, oysters, and hot springs. While the bustling city of Sendai offers some simple city entertainment, it’s the Matsushima islands that deserve the most attention, having boosted the prefecture’s reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic views.
