One of Japan's ancient checkpoints located a 30 minute bus ride from JR Shirakawa Station in Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture. Considered one of the three major checkpoints of the bygone Mutsu Domain, descriptions of the barrier appear in the poems of Matsuo Basho and many other poets. Shirakawaseki no Mori Park is located nearby as well as facsimiles of ancient facilities that once stood here based on literature and other sources from the time. The barrier has been selected as a National Historic Site and is visited by many tourists.

Its Exact Location Was Determined in the Edo Era

I visited this National Historic Site with my wife. The exact location of the gateway to Tohoku area had been lost until it was determined in the Edo era. As such, there is not much to see.

古代から中世にかけて関所がおかれていたところです。江戸時代にはどこに関所があったか不明だったそうですが、「寛政の改革」で有名な松平定信が発見したとか。江戸時代に建てられた古い石碑もありました。今は神社になっていて、散策コース等もありました。

白河の関という単語は知っているが、関所がどういうものかは実感が無かった。白河の関跡には白河神社以外にもお堀の跡があり、当時どういった場所だったのか、というのが想像出来る。跡なので見応えはないかもしれないが、機会があれば訪れる価値はあると思う。
