A Shinto shrine dedicated to the Munakata Sanjo-shin, the three female children of Amaterasu the sun goddess; the shrine is located on ground considered the birthplace of Aomori City. The shrine provides worshippers with safe journeys. The shrine's popular omamori charms are decorated with a cute depiction of rhinoceros auklets, birds which are called utou in Japanese.

「奥州街道終点記念の碑」と「青森市道路元標」

善知鳥神社前の歩道上に目立たないながら石碑が立っていました。黒い石で文字自体が読み辛く通り過ぎてしまいそうでしたが、近くの説明板で良く分かりました。そこには、「奥州街道終点記念の碑」は「平成3年」、「青森市道路元標」は「大正11年」と記されていました。

巨大な黒い墓石のような石碑です。善知鳥神社の正面入り口鳥居や社殿を正面に見て右手にあります。石碑と説明の看板がありました。

善知鳥神社正面入口の右側にあります。近くに説明板があり、東京日本橋が起点、江戸初期の「幕府撰慶長日本図」によると津軽藩出張機関が置かれたこの地が終点とありました。黒い御影石に奥州街道終点記念の碑、後ろ側に幕府撰慶長日本図と彫られていました。なお、傍に青森市道路元標があり、境内に青森町役場が昔あったことから青森市発祥の地だそうです。
