Since I spent a full week in the area I visited the michi-no-eki on a daily basis. It is a very friendly place and it is very easy to meet other travelers. The wi-fi is a bit iffy but a good fall...
Camping at a convenient half way point

We are not super athletic so we decided to stop half way. There is also a market with some local food so this might be a good place for a picnic. They have camping for ¥1,000 and ¥300 per person...
