Shimantoya四万十屋

4.0

Local Cuisine

This souvenir shop is on the bank of the Shimanto River in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture and contains a restaurant on the second floor. It opened in 1967. The first floor sells processed goods such as natural eel, shrimp, sweetfish, and seaweed from the Shimanto River, which is said to be Japan’s last remaining limpid river. The chef, who is also a river fisherman, offers dishes such as grilled eel and rice, natural salt-grilled sweetfish, fried river shrimp, and other local cuisine. Depending on the season, you may be able to sit outside on the terrace and gaze at the river while you eat.

I came here to try their wild eel. It was okay, the meat of wild eel is leaner than those of farmed eel. The wild eel came at a price JPY3,980 but it was worth a try nonetheless.

The largest of Shikoku's prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island's most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you're a pilgrim or not, Kochi's 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
