Kurashiki-Isho Achi Branch倉敷意匠アチブランチ
This is a sundry goods shop located on the first floor of the main building of the Hayashi Genjuro Shoten, a complex in a repaired and refurbished wooden Western-style building of the early Showa period, about 15 minutes on foot from Kurashiki Station. It is the first whole-sale store of the Kurashiki-based miscellaneous goods maker Kurashiki Design Planning Office. The shop offers about 2,000 original handicraft items carefully handmade by artists, making full use of the characteristics of the material such as paper, cloth, wood and glass. In the connected gallery space, workshops and exhibitions with the theme of monozukuri (manufacturing) are also held.

Overshadowed by Hiroshima to the west and the Kansai region to the east, Okayama is an easy spot to miss but a nature-rich gem where the Seto Inland Sea laps at its toes and peach and grape farms complete its interior. One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Koraku-en in Okayama city is well worth a visit before progressing to Kurashiki, where preserved wooden Edo buildings line the picturesque canal.
