Zuto Pagoda (Historic Site)

Other Historic Site/Building
This historical site is located in Takabatakecho, Nara City. Legend has it that the head of the monk Genbo was buried here during the Nara period. While its current name is based on this legend, it is actually thought to be the site of a soil pagoda built by Jitchu, a monk of Todai-ji Temple, to pray for national peace. The three-tier soil pagoda features 13 Buddhist relief sculptures, a rare example of a group of stone Buddhist images from the Nara period.
