Old Kayano Residence (Memorial Hall of Nun Junkyo Oishi)

Memorial Hall
This is a memorial hall in Kudoyama, Kudoyama Town. It was originally built in the mid-Edo period as Koyasan Shinzoin’s Satobo, and as a private house was transferred to Kudoyama Town in 2009 in the aim of preserving it as a cultural asset and is now open to the public. It is known as a place where the nun Junkyo Oishi occasionally stayed, and they hold exhibitions of the paintings and calligraphic works she left there.

    大石順教尼は踊り子で順調に人生を歩みながらも、事件で突然両手を失いながらも文字を学び、口に筆を加えて絵や文字を書き、更には女性の障害者の支援団体を作った素晴らしい方です。文字を見ると困難に負けない勇気が出ます。

    展示は、ハッとするほど美しい筆致のかな文字とかの色紙など。しかし、それが口にくわえた筆で書いたものだと知ると、ちょっと衝撃的。障害を乗り越えて、ここまでの芸術の高みに至ったのはすべての人に勇気を与えるものだと思います。
