Japanese Confectionery

You’ll find this confectionery inside “Okage Yokocho” area next to Naiku, Ise-jingu Shrine in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, marked by a signboard with an old coin. This small shop brims with old-fashioned Japanese charm and is always full of tourists. There are 150 varieties of sweets available, including “karinto” (fried dough cookies), candy, wheat-gluten snacks, rice crackers, and more. The most popular is the “waraji karinto”, which is as big as a straw sandal. All the sweets are traditional, relatively healthy, and great as gifts or eating as you walk about.

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
