The Maneki-neko (lucky beckoning cat) specialty store is in the Okage Yokocho area near Inner Ise Shrine in Ise, Mie. The store is marked by a large stone beckoning cat just outside. Inside the store you’ll find nearly 1,000 different types of beckoning cats on display from all around the country. You’ll find cats in all mediums such as pottery, including the Tokoname, Seto, and Kutani ceramic styles, papier-mache, and wood carvings from a variety of different types of wood. They also deal in works by contemporary writers and beckoning cat traditional toys. Each cat has a different form and expression, and they’re all adorable.

Reviewed:2019/05/01

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
