SHINTSURU-HONTEN
This long-established traditional Japanese candy store founded in 1873 is famous for shioyokan (red bean jelly with salt), the specialty of Shimosuwa. Developed by the first-generation owner who took great pains to find the right balance in flavor, it became loved as a priceless and special sweet by people in the area, which is located far from the sea and where salt was precious. Using Tokachi-grown red beans and naturally-made agar, it is still kneading over lit oak wood, and is the gem of skilled pastry chefs. Exquisite with a slight salty taste within its sweetness, it is the classic snack of Shimosuwa. The nearest station is Shimosuwa Station.
