Tateiwa is a rock, approximately 20 meters high, on the Nochigahama Coast in the city of Kyotango, Kyoto Prefecture. According to legend, Emperor Yomei's third son, Maroko-no-miko, drove away some demons and sealed them up inside the rock. Tateiwa is well-known as one of the few naturally occurring large-scale rocks in Japan, and as such, it attracts large numbers of tourists.

近くに宿泊施設、道の駅、温泉もあるので好ロケーションです。付近は綺麗な砂浜ですが、今夏はコロナウィルスで空いていた一方で逆に漂流ゴミが多いように思いました。
ぽつんと安山岩の岩脈。山陰海岸ジオパークの見どころのひとつ。

178号線をドライブしていると「立岩」の案内標識があり、事前知識なく立ち寄ってみた。すじすじの岩が海岸に屹立していて意外な迫力であった。国交省の地質図(*1)をみると、ここだけぽつんと安山岩の岩脈（紫蘇輝石安山岩）があって、何百万年の前に溶岩が深部でゆっくり冷えて固まった際の筋状の大きな結晶が地殻変動で地表に現れ海水で削られる一方、周囲には砂が堆積してこの「カニかまぼこ」状の地形が生まれたことが想...
