Chionji Temple (Monjudo)

This temple in Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Also called Monjudo, it enshrines Monju Bodhisattva. Known as a deity of wisdom, lots of students come for prayers, especially at exam time. The temple has many important cultural assets too, such as its Tahoto Pagoda.

重要文化財の多宝塔

智恩寺の山門をくぐって左手にある。この多宝塔は室町時代のもので、重要文化財に指定されている。歴史の重みを感じさせる。けばけばしくないのがいい。
海風に朽ちなかった室町建築

日本三文殊の一つに数えられる文殊寺境内にあり室町後期に建てられたもので国の重文指定。雪舟の「天橋立図」に描かれるものがこれかどうかで論争があるようです。禅の影響の渋い色合いがあたりの松に映えていました。

智恩寺の山門(黄金閣)をくぐり、本堂(文殊堂)へ向かって進むと左手にある。1501年建立で国の重要文化財。多宝塔というと朱塗りのものが多いがこちらは素木のまま。それが侘び寂びを感じさせる。塔内には大日如来が安置されているとのことだが内部を見ることはできない。
