There is a 100 meter long waterway in the Shinmachi neighborhood, under which an abundance of spring water flows; filled with gracefully swimming carp, it is nicknamed the “City of Swimming Carp.” Colorful carp were first released into the waterway in 1978 with the aim of promoting curiosity and joy among children and today it has become a symbol of Shimabara, a city renowned for its spring water.

    島原は水が豊富な町。ところどころにある湧水池では鯉が泳いでいる。「観光交流センター 清流亭」の向かいには「鯉の泳ぐまち」と刻まれた石碑が立ち、その近辺の水路にも錦鯉が放流されている。道路脇の排水路にしか見えないところに泳ぐ錦鯉、写真映えのするスポットである。
