Monument to Commemorate the First Step onto Hokkaido

Other Historic Site/Building
In the period after the Meiji Restoration, Hakodate became the gateway to Hokkaido. Monument to Commemorate the First Step onto Hokkaido was erected in 1968 at the foot of Higashihama Pier (which was the first place that new arrivals would set foot on in Hokkaido) to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening up of Hokkaido to large-scale Japanese settlement from Honshu. Today, there is a footpath where visitors can stroll while enjoying the views of Hakodate Bay.
