Akita Station has undergone extensive renovations per Northern Station Gate Akita, a project implemented jointly by the East Japan Railway Company and the local government. In addition to improvements being made to the station's waiting lounge and tourist information center, the Topico station building mall has been remodeled (floors 1-3), and construction has been completed on the Akita Northern Gate Square on the east side of the station as well as the D-Crest Akita-ekimae Akita Northern Gate Training Camp, making it a center for area tourism.
