"This temple is a sub-temple of Sennyuji Temple, the head temple of the Sennyuji sect of Shingon Buddhism. It was also a mortuary temple of the imperial family. Established in 1223, the ancient temple venerates the Joroku Shakanoryaizo, a 10-meter-tall statue of Gautama Buddha, which survived the fires of the Onin War, as its principle object of worship. Legend has it the substance that appears to be running from the neck of the statue is a bloodstain from when the statue took the place of Emperor Go-Mizunoo to protect him from an assassination attempt while he slept. Based on this legend, the statue became revered as the ""migawari no oshakasama,"" meaning ""the substitute Bhudda."" The faithful believe that it takes the place of people to protect them from evil and that it cures sicknesses of the neck and above. Even today the statue is affectionately called Joroku-san, which means ""a large Buddha statue."""

泉涌寺の山内にある寺の一つ。釈迦如来の立像が有名だそうだが、今回は中に入らなかった。本堂は改装中のようで、なぜか鬼瓦が外に展示されてあった。
見上げる大きな仏様

１１／２０に初訪問。泉涌寺へと向かう道すがら立ち寄りました。無料で拝観できます。本堂内にはとても大きな仏様（５ｍ以上）が祀られています。天井を見あげるように拝む形になります。ここまで大きいのに、拝観無料というのも珍しい。なんでも運慶親子の作だとか。
多くの文化財を有する寺院です。七福神霊場の第２番札所、弁財天も祀る。

ここは泉涌寺の塔頭として、又、泉涌寺七福神の一つとして存在感もある寺院ですが、それよりもここのご本尊の身の丈１０ｍと云う木造としてはかなり巨大な丈六釈迦如来像が有名です。首から上、首(喉)のご利益が特にあるとか。眼も悪い、歯も悪い、ついでに頭も今一つ・・・と云う私には願ってもないご利益の仏さんですが、今日は、残念、法事とかで関係者以外は本堂に入れなかった。境内は相変わらず出入り自由だが・・・。なお...
