Hot Spring / Hot Spring Bath

This day-use onsen is across from Michi-no-Eki Karen, about 30-minutes south of Gero Station on Route 41. It has high ceilings with an open feel, and seven baths including a full body bath, a source-fed bath, and an outdoor bath. The simple alkaline hot spring is colorless and all-natural. Bathing in it is said to help alleviate nerve pain, muscle soreness, chronic digestive ailments, lower back pain, motor paralysis, and recovery from fatigue. It warms you up nicely too. Their roughly 165-square-meter hall holds a variety of seasonal events like karaoke contests and musical performances.

Tucked away in the very center of Japan, Gifu prefecture houses mountains, old towns, and one of Japan's greatest hot springs, Gero Onsen. A tour of the prefecture's traditional architecture will take you from the mountain-enveloped wooden streets of Takayama to the mountain village of Shirakawago, where visitors can explore 250-year-old thatched roofed houses known as gassho-zukuri.
