Bancho Elementary School (Shiki Masaoka Statue)

Historical Monument
This statue is located at Matsuyama Municipal Bancho Elementary School in Niban-cho 4-Chome, Matsuyama City. It depicts the poet Masaoka Shiki kneeling to tie his sandals before setting off on a journey. Masaoka was a graduate of the Katsuyama School, the predecessor of today’s Bancho Elementary School. Stone monuments bearing haiku by poets such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi have also been erected on the school’s grounds.
