Haiku Capital Matsuyama Haiku Post Boxes

Other Sightseeing Spot
These haiku post boxes allow anyone to submit a haiku. The first was installed at the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway’s Chojaganaru Station in 1968 after a popular tourism haiku contest commemorating the 100th anniversary of the births of Masaoka Shiki, Natsume Soseki, and Yanagihara Kyokudo. Today there are 92 of these post boxes installed around Matsuyama City at local tourist attractions, inside streetcars, at lodging facilities in Dogo Onsen, and other locations. There are also 14 post boxes installed outside the prefecture as well as five installed overseas. Once every three months, local haiku poets select the best of all the submitted haiku. Each of the winners is presented with a collection of all the award-winning haiku.
